How to get a jump on your competition

How To Get A Jump On Your Competition

I know that I am not the only one that feels like 2017 has flown by. The important thing to remember is that even though you might only have about two more weeks of work this year- it is not over yet.

Which leads me to one of the best tips that I can give- get started now. Today! Why? It's true that most companies are heading into a budgeting lull. They are trying to figure out department budgets for next year and use up any remaining allocations for this year. Wouldn't it be great to have the manager at your dream company ask for more money next year, specifically with you in mind?

How do you make that happen? The easiest answer is through networking during this holiday season. That's right... go easy on the nog. This is one time of year that you will likely see and be in contact with people that you might not be in touch with the rest of the year. Customers or folks in a new department might mention being shorthanded, while relatives and friends are sure to ask what you are up to these days. It is great to fill them in on some of your recent triumphs and "war stories", but it is even better to let them know (with rehearsed specificity) that you hope to make a job move in early 2018.

It is also a great time to work on your soft skills and modestly impress people with a facet they may not already know about you. And of course, afterward sending a tasteful and appropriate holiday greeting will only further your cause. Networking is a two-way street; be on the lookout for other folks you can help get a foot in the door or help to connect.

So eat, drink, and of course be merry. Only 19 days until Christmas!
